Workout Readiness Checklist: Adjust Load, Volume, or Rest
Use warm-up speed, form, sleep, soreness, and your last workout log to decide whether to keep the session, reduce load, cut sets, or stop.

A low-readiness workout is not a verdict on your plan. It is a signal to make the smallest useful change before the first hard set. The goal is not to prove discipline by forcing every planned number, and it is not to skip training because the warm-up felt unpleasant. The goal is to decide what today can support while keeping tomorrow's log honest.

Quick answer: keep the planned session when warm-ups move normally, form stays familiar, and soreness is only background noise. Reduce the load when the first working weight feels slower than usual but technique is still controllable. Cut volume when the main lift is acceptable but fatigue climbs faster than expected. Stop the lift, change the exercise, or rest when there is sharp pain, dizziness, illness, or coordination that feels unsafe.
Decision table: if the warm-up feels normal, then train the plan; if the warm-up is slow but controlled, then lower load 5-10% and keep the movement; if the first hard set is safe but expensive, then keep one or two quality sets and remove accessory volume; if pain or unstable technique appears, then stop that lift. Start With the Warm-Up Signal
Mood can be wrong at the gym door. The first warm-up sets are more useful because they show bar speed, balance, breathing, and how quickly technique sharpens.
